Spoiler alert, please look away now if your idea of chic is white or black monochrome. As today its all about aesthetics that excite and inspire passion....
We all have people or characters that inspire us, for me I love love love influencer's who have individual style and are not afraid to show it.
Who rather than follow trends, invent them and when I say influencer's, I am not talking about people on social media with large generated accounts touting gifted items. I am talking about the people who invent our trends, the trend forecasters, stylists, those quirky accounts with so much style.
Where does one start from..
The curators of our style or their muse?
I got into social media simply by stalking pictures of the great Rachel Zoe www.instagram.com/rachelzoe/, who's aesthetic I so admire.
Following her right from her time on the small screen, it was clear to me that her passion lay in vintage 70's boho chic style.
Curating a collection which eventually led to her career in fashion design.
The success of her eponimous brand is clearly under pinned by her re interpretation of own vintage pieces.
While searching for images to inspire myself, I discovered who else but perhaps my favorite stylist the " Poirot" of fashion, the Grand dame herself, Catherine Baba www.instagram.com/catherinebaba/..
Need I say more, turbans, the highest of heels in kimono's sat precariously on her bike on the streets of Paris.
Some how Catherine Baba manages not to convey a vision of costume but that of effortless chic, owning every outlandish look , like a true to heart Dame.
Can one re-produce her look? Unlikely as their can only be one Catherine Baba.
That's vintage for you, an Aladdin's cave of treasures where one can invent oneself in the truest form of style whilst remaining authentic and individual.
How does one do eclectic vintage chic if you're English? Well my friends you do a Mrs Emily Evans. A stylist and writer who somehow manages to create a vision of gentrified vintage !!!
Somehow she does this extremely well, from festival chic to her actual work as a stylist, producing work that is fresh, modern yet classically vintage.
Only she is able to curate vintage swim wear which could have been easily seen on the runways of Prada, Miumiu to name a few, see her latest blog post; www.emilyevansmedia.com/single-post/2017/08/22/Vintage-Summer-Round-.
Does vintage have to be expensive?
No, the joy of vintage is the massive pleasure in the find, finding that awesome piece in the thrift store, for next to nothing....
Or finding that Ossie Clark dress in a vintage store and paying quickly for it knowing you may never find that piece....
Who best exemplifies this but the ever so chic Jenny M Walton www.instagram.com/jennymwalton/.
The epitome of how vintage should always be done. A balanced mixture of high and low, with less emphasis on cost. How does one value a one off handmade embroidered shift dress or that cataloged but unsigned earring from 50 years ago??
Jenny Walton often shares her favorite etsy finds with her fans on Instagram, whats not to love.
Is timeless chic always vintage? No not necessarily, but it pays to have an imagination, to see beyond what the merchandisers want you to see, to have your own style and direction.
Who else comes to mind but Susie Bubble?
A curator and writer who is so passionate about fashion that only a paragraph off any of her blogs would convince you that fashion to her is something quite cerebral. This is even before you see an image of the curator herself. Sussie is often kitted in current designer clothes but reinterpreted to suit her aesthetics. A lesson in how to wear nouveau if I may say so myself.
Now to how to wear vintage,
first question obviously is where to get vintage from.
Inspiration, where do you find them?
Well thank goodness for instagram, pintrest and google search.
Even better that our vintage stores are now on instagram, styling and posting pictures on real life models. I've listed a few good vintage stores with plenty of positive feed back, click for links.
I have no personal interests to declare.
All pictures except mine are from pintrest, with all due rights to owners.
